How it works
Point the camera. That's the whole flow.

Scan
A photo of the plate goes straight to a quantised vision model on the device. The picture never leaves the phone, so there is nothing to upload and nothing to wait for on bad signal.

Correct
The model's guess is a starting point, not a verdict. Rename the dish and the calories follow the name through a local database of 1,065 foods (Filipino home cooking, the chains, and the Western shelf) so the correction sticks and the food is one search away next time.

A whole tray
A wider shot is read as what it is: rice, a viand and a drink come back as three rows with their own portions, not one row named after whichever dish the camera saw first.

Today's split, an example
Deliberately absent
No feed, no badges, no cloud fallback.
There is no social feed, fasting timer, sleep tracker or workout log. There is no account. There are no ads, no data sale, and no free tier funded by either. CalOff is paid for by the people using it, which is why it can afford to want nothing else from them. And there is no "just this once" server call when a scan is hard. The moment that exists, the one thing that makes CalOff different is gone.

Privacy Policy
Effective 3 September 2026
CalOff does not collect your data, because it has nowhere to send it. There is no CalOff account, no CalOff server and no CalOff analytics. This policy explains what that means precisely, including the one time the app uses the network.
What stays on your device
All of it. Specifically:
- Meal photos. A photo you take or pick is analysed by a model running on the phone and is not uploaded anywhere. CalOff does not copy it into its own storage; it is read, analysed and released.
- Your food log, meaning dish names, portions, calories, macros and timestamps, is written to a database inside the app's private storage on the device.
- Your profile, meaning age, sex, height, weight, activity level, goal and unit preference, which is used only to compute your calorie and macro targets, on the device.
- Your weight history, if you record weigh-ins.
- Foods you save to the local food database.
None of this is transmitted to us or to anyone else. We cannot read it, and we could not produce it if we were asked to.
The one network request
Before the first scan, CalOff downloads the vision model it runs, a file of roughly 728 MB, from Hugging Face, a public model host. It is a plain file download, started once and resumable.
That request necessarily reveals to Hugging Face what any file download reveals: your IP address, the time of the request and which file you asked for. CalOff attaches no identifier, no account and no information about you to it. Hugging Face's handling of that request is governed by their privacy policy. After the download completes, the app makes no further network requests. Scanning, nutrition lookup and search are entirely local, and CalOff works with the device in airplane mode.
What we do not do
- No analytics or telemetry SDK of any kind.
- No crash or performance reporting service.
- No advertising, no advertising identifiers, no third-party trackers.
- No sale or sharing of personal information. There is none to sell.
- No cross-app or cross-site tracking, so CalOff never needs to ask for tracking permission.
Permissions, and why
- Camera, to photograph a meal. The live preview runs inside the app; frames are used for the scan and nothing else.
- Photo library, only when you choose to log a meal you already photographed, and only for the image you pick.
- Internet (Android), for the one model download described above.
You can refuse any of these. Refusing the camera or photo library means you log meals by search or by hand; the rest of the app is unaffected.
The watch and widget companions
The Apple Watch and Wear OS apps, the home-screen widgets and the Lock Screen complication display the same day's totals that the phone app already holds. Those figures are passed from the phone to the watch over the platform's own local pairing channel, either Apple's Watch Connectivity or Google's Wearable Data Layer, which is a direct link between your own two devices. They travel no further, and no server of ours is involved.
Children
CalOff is not directed at children under 13, and we do not knowingly collect information from them. Since the app collects nothing at all, there is nothing for us to delete on request, but see the next section for how to remove everything from the device.
Deleting your data
Two ways, both immediate and both complete:
- Settings → Reset inside the app clears the food log, profile and weight history.
- Delete the app. iOS and Android remove the app's private storage with it. Nothing survives elsewhere, because nothing was ever elsewhere.
Your rights
Laws such as the GDPR, the UK GDPR, the CCPA/CPRA and the Philippine Data Privacy Act give you rights of access, correction, deletion, portability and objection over personal data a company holds about you. We hold none: CalOff processes your information only on your own device, under your control. You exercise every one of those rights directly, by opening, editing or deleting the data in the app. If you would like this confirmed in writing for a compliance review, write to us and we will confirm it.
Changes
If this policy changes, the revised version is posted on this page with a new effective date. A change that would materially reduce the protection described here would be announced in the app's release notes as well.

Terms of Use

These terms are the agreement between you and the developer of CalOff ("we", "us") covering your use of the CalOff app and its watch and widget companions. Installing or using the app means you accept them.
1. Your licence
We grant you a personal, non-exclusive, non-transferable licence to use CalOff on devices you own or control, as permitted by the rules of the App Store or Google Play. You may not resell, rent, sub-licence or redistribute the app, or reverse-engineer, decompile or disassemble it except to the extent that law expressly permits despite this restriction.
2. CalOff is not medical advice
This is the important one. CalOff is a food diary and an estimator. It is not a medical device, and nothing it shows is medical, nutritional or clinical advice, diagnosis or treatment. Calorie and macro targets are computed from a standard published formula (Mifflin‑St Jeor) applied to figures you enter; they are a general estimate and take no account of your medical history, medication, pregnancy, an eating disorder or any condition affecting your metabolism.
Talk to a qualified health professional before changing your diet, and do not disregard professional advice because of something this app displayed. If you are being treated for, or are at risk of, a disordered relationship with food, please consult your clinician before using a calorie tracker at all.
3. Accuracy
Estimates from a photograph are estimates. The model infers what a dish is and how much of it is on the plate, and it will sometimes be wrong about both: a hidden ingredient, an unusual recipe, an oil you cannot see, a bowl deeper than it looks. The bundled food database is a curated set of common foods, not a licensed nutritional authority. Treat every figure as a starting point you correct, and never as a measurement. We make no warranty that any number the app produces is accurate.
4. Your data is yours, and it is your responsibility
CalOff stores your log on your device and nowhere else, which is the point of it. The consequence is that there is no backup: if you delete the app, reset it, or lose or wipe the device, the log is gone and we cannot restore it. Use your platform's device backup if you want that history to survive.
5. Purchase, and the store's rules
CalOff is sold through the App Store and Google Play, as a monthly or yearly subscription or as a one-time lifetime purchase. Subscriptions renew automatically until you cancel, and you cancel them in your store account rather than in the app; the lifetime purchase does not renew. Price, payment, tax, refunds and regional availability are handled by those stores under their own terms, not by us. A refund request goes to Apple or Google. Your licence is tied to the store account you bought it with and to that store's family-sharing and re-download rules, and "Restore purchase" in the app is how you bring it back onto a new device.
6. Acceptable use
Do not use CalOff unlawfully, do not attempt to defeat its licensing, and do not use it to build a competing product from its outputs. That is the whole list.
7. Third-party components
CalOff runs an open-source vision model through an open-source inference runtime, and downloads model weights from Hugging Face. Those components carry their own licences, which continue to apply to them. We do not control Hugging Face's service and are not responsible for its availability.
8. Warranty and liability
To the fullest extent the law allows, CalOff is provided "as is" and "as available", without warranties of any kind, express or implied, including merchantability, fitness for a particular purpose and non-infringement. To the fullest extent the law allows, we are not liable for indirect, incidental, special or consequential loss, or for lost data, arising from your use of the app; and our total liability is limited to the amount you paid for it.
Some jurisdictions do not allow the exclusion of certain warranties or the limitation of certain liabilities. Where that is so, these exclusions apply only as far as that jurisdiction permits, and your statutory consumer rights are unaffected.
9. Apple
Where you obtained CalOff from the App Store: this agreement is between you and us, not Apple, and Apple is not responsible for the app or its content. Apple has no obligation to provide support for it. Apple and its subsidiaries are third-party beneficiaries of this agreement and may enforce it against you.
10. Changes and termination
We may update these terms; the current version always lives on this page with its effective date, and continuing to use the app after a change means you accept it. Your licence ends if you stop complying with these terms, in which case, delete the app.
11. Governing law
These terms are governed by the laws of the Republic of the Philippines, without regard to conflict-of-law rules, and the courts there have jurisdiction, except where the mandatory consumer-protection law of your own country of residence gives you a right to bring proceedings locally, in which case that right stands.

The first scan is stuck downloading
The model is a single 728 MB download. If it stalls, it resumes from where it stopped rather than starting again. Reopen Settings → Scanner and start it once more. On a metered connection, wait for Wi-Fi: this is the only download CalOff will ever ask you for.
The calories look wrong
They probably are, and correcting them is part of the flow rather than a workaround. Tap the dish name on the result screen and type what it actually was; the nutrition follows the corrected name through the local food database. Adjust the portion in grams if the size was misjudged. What you save is what gets logged, and the food is searchable afterwards.
Scanning is slow, or the app is warm
Inference is real work being done on your phone rather than in a data centre, so it costs battery and takes a few seconds. There is one model and every phone runs the same one, so the answer does not change with the hardware, only how long it takes. If it still struggles, log by search: it is instant, and it is the same database.
My watch shows nothing, or yesterday's numbers
The watch app mirrors the phone; it never talks to a server. Open CalOff on the phone once with both devices nearby and unlocked, and the watch and tile catch up. Check that CalOff is installed on the watch, and on Android that the phone and watch are paired in the Wear OS app.
I switched phones and my log is gone
The log lives only on the device, which is what keeps it private and also means there is no cloud copy to restore. A full device backup (iCloud device backup, or Google's backup on Android) carries it across; a fresh install does not. We cannot recover a log that was not backed up.
How do I delete everything?
Settings → Reset clears the log, profile and weight history immediately. Deleting the app removes everything else with it. See the Privacy Policy for what "everything" covers.
Refunds
Purchases are handled by the stores, so refunds go through them: reportaproblem.apple.com for the App Store, or Google Play's order history on Android. We cannot issue one directly, but tell us what went wrong. That is how it gets fixed for the next person.
